Sound And Silence ran another excellent race when going down by a neck in the G3 Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes on day one of the Dubai Future Champions Festival at Newmarket, UK, on Friday, October 13.

The Charlie Appleby-trained two-year-old colt, shouldering a 3lb penalty and giving weight all round after winning the G3 Prix Eclipse at Maisons-Laffitte, France, on September 20, broke well and raced a bit keenly when a close third in the five-furlong contest.

The son of Exceed And Excel moved up to take a narrow advantage under William Buick with a furlong and a half to race and rallied gamely after being headed by Abel Handy just inside the final furlong.

Abel Handy, previously a half-length second to Sound And Silence in the Listed Roses Stakes at York in August, held on to set a new juvenile course record of 58.65s on good ground.

Charlie Appleby said: “Sound And Silence was bit free early on today and was probably beaten by his penalty.

“We will put him away now for the year and bring him back for sprinting next season as he seems to be good at it.

“He has been ultra-consistent all year and is a fun horse to have around.”
