Latharnach rallied in the closing stages to come home third in the Group Three Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes over a mile at Goodwood, UK, on Friday, July 31.

The three-year-old colt, representing Charlie Appleby, raced keenly when a close fifth of the 10 runners before taking slightly closer order under William Buick to go fourth at the half-way stage.

He was pushed along to press for second just inside the final quarter-mile but wandered around under pressure and raced in fourth again passing the furlong-pole.

Latharnach fought back after straightening up to regain third near the line and go down by three and three quarter lengths in total to Malabar, who won decisively in 1m 36.82s on going described as good, good to firm in places.

Charlie Appleby commented: "William said Latharnach has travelled around there well enough but just lacked that final gear.

"My first reaction is that it's a bit disappointing. We rode him to finish the race at Ascot and that's what he did, whereas we had him a bit closer today because we knew there was not going to be a mad gallop.

"We will get him home and have a bit of a rethink. I think a mile is his trip but perhaps a more conventional, galloping track will suit him better as he is a big horse - maybe somewhere like York or Doncaster.

"He has no penalty so we will probably drop him back into a Listed race."
