Well Of Wisdom returned to form with a brave all-the-way success in the Listed Meydan Classic over a turf mile on week nine of the Dubai World Cup Carnival at Meydan, UAE, on Thursday, 27 February.

The three-year-old colt, successful in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure at Longchamp, France, in July for Charlie Appleby, broke well and was sent to the front of the 13 runners by William Buick. He kicked on at the top of the straight and found plenty in the closing stages, seeing off the late challenge of Silent Night for a neck verdict.

Light Blush (Charlie Appleby/Mickael Barzalona) finished well to take third, a further half-length in arrears, with the same margin back to Colour Image (Saeed bin Suroor/Kevin Stott) in fourth.

Charlie Appleby said: “Well Of Wisdom did everything the wrong way round on his first start at Meydan but Mickael Barzalona made all on him in a Listed race last year, so I told William Buick to go back to our usual tactics. William has given the horse a lovely ride.

“We have entered him in the G2 German 2,000 Guineas and he could go for a race like that. We will probably go pot hunting with him and hopefully he can build on this performance back in Europe.

“We always felt that Light Blush was going to find a bit more when we stepped her up in trip and she has proved that tonight. She is Listed placed now, so it does her page no harm and we will probably take her back to the UK now to have a bit of fun with her.”

William Buick said: “Well Of Wisdom has definitely come forward for his first run of the year, when he was a bit fresh. Charlie was very keen to let him go forward tonight and allow him to use himself. He stuck at it very well and really put his head down in the straight.”
