Balsamine steps up to Pattern level on her seasonal return in the Group Three Prix Penelope over 10 and a half furlongs at Saint-Cloud, France, on Tuesday, April 14.
The Andre Fabre-trained filly made three appearances as a juvenile last season, including a decisive win on her latest start in a nine-furlong Polytrack conditions race at Chantilly on November 7.
The three-year-old daughter of Street Cry, who is out of one of Godolphin's earliest stars, Oaks and Irish Derby winner Balanchine, also gained a comprehensive success in a Viscoride maiden over an extended mile at Pornichet-La-Baule in October and came home third on her debut in a mile newcomers' race at Longchamp in September.
Lisa-Jane Graffard of Godolphin said: "Balsamine is in good form. She needs to run in Group company now, having won a maiden and a conditions race as a juvenile.
"This is a bit of a fact-finding mission in terms of finding out which level she will be racing at over the coming months.
"She has never shown a huge amount at home and surprised us a little last year with her performances on the racecourse.
"We hope she can continue her improvement this season."
Mickael Barzalona rides Balsamine, who faces five other three-year-old fillies including Group Three runner-up Baltic Comtesse, Chantilly conditions race winner Spring Leaf and Saint-Cloud debut scorer Queen's Jewel.
