Mountain Breeze kicked off her three-year-old season in sensational style with a commanding display in the Mawj Stakes at Meydan, UAE, on Friday, 31 January.

The Charlie Appleby-trained filly, a close relative to outstanding Champion Two-Year-Old Pinatubo, was quick into her stride and soon tracked Naana’s Diamond and Lhakpa down the inside rail.

Switched out turning in, Mountain Breeze cruised up to tackle the leading duo a furlong and a half out and readily stretched clear, with William Buick easing the daughter of Lope de Vega close home to score by an easy six and a quarter lengths.

William Buick said: “Mountain Breeze was entitled to win, and she was probably entitled to win how she did, but it is always nice to see them go and do it. I was really pleased with her.

“She was an early two-year-old, showing a lot of pace to win over five furlongs in May last year. Now she looks like she stays seven well and will get a mile. She is not the biggest, but there is every indication that she has trained on. Let’s hope she can progress from this.

“The Jumeirah 1,000 Guineas is such a nice race over here for the fillies. That is another step for her and then we will see where we are after that.”
